xAI puts Grok's image and video generation into one weekly pool shared with a coding agent

The X Subscription replaced SuperGrok on October 12 with five tiers, and none of the published plan descriptions say how many images or seconds of video an allowance buys.

On October 12, 2026 xAI launched The X Subscription, folding Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium into one plan with a shared weekly usage pool. Reported tiers run Free, Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 a month. No tier publishes an image or video quota.

Grok's image and video generation no longer has a subscription of its own. On October 12, 2026 xAI replaced SuperGrok and the separate Cursor and X Premium plans with a single product, The X Subscription, in which paid tiers draw from one shared weekly usage pool. The announcement says the plan "brings together Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor, and X Premium in one plan" and lists what Grok contributes as chat, voice, and image and video generation. What it does not list anywhere is how many images or how many seconds of video a given allowance pays for.

Reporting of xAI's published pricing table puts the ladder at Free, Plus at $8 a month, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200, with annual prices offered on the paid individual plans. Usage is expressed as multiples of the Plus allowance: Premium at 4x, Super at 15x, Ultra at 50x. xAI frames Premium as covering what it says previously cost $90 a month across SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+.

The plan copy does not agree on which tier includes video

This is where the detail gets slippery for anyone buying the subscription to make media. Descriptions of the Plus tier list the Grok tools Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, which reads as image generation included at $8. Descriptions of Premium separately list AI image and video generation as something that tier adds, and at least one pricing tracker states flatly that Plus carries Imagine images but no video generation. Those readings cannot all be right, and xAI's own tier summaries are the reason they conflict: the plans are described by feature names, not by what each feature is metered at.

The multipliers compound the problem. A video generation and a coding agent run now compete for the same weekly pool, so the practical ceiling on clips depends on what else a subscriber does with the account that week. A tier priced as 4x another tier tells you nothing about clip counts unless the cost of one clip in pool units is published, and it is not.

For Grok Video buyers, the per-generation number still comes from elsewhere

Anyone who needs a predictable cost per clip is left comparing third-party platforms that resell the model and bill per generation. That is the figure our radar tracks for Grok Video across the platforms carrying it.

What one 720p, 5-second clip of Grok Video costs
Kie.ai$0.11
OpenArt$0.33
fal.ai$0.35
xAI API$0.35

Quality is the other half of the trade, and that is measured per category rather than per plan. Our benchmark scores the model on the things short clips actually get judged on, including hands, faces and camera movement.

What is confirmed and what is not

Confirmed: the bundle exists, launched October 12, rolls out globally, and is optional for existing subscribers, who keep their current plan unless they switch. Also confirmed is that switching cancels eligible monthly or annual plans with a prorated refund before billing under the new plan. Not confirmed, and not published in any plan description seen so far, is the unit cost of a Grok image or a Grok video inside the shared pool, or a definitive statement of the lowest paid tier at which video generation is actually available. Until xAI publishes either, the $8 entry price is a headline number rather than a media budget.
