Best Sora Alternatives Now That It's Shutting Down for Good
Sora's app went dark in April, the API follows in September. Based on our own testing, here's what we'd actually use instead.
Sora is not coming back. The consumer app and website went dark in April 2026, and the developer API follows on 24 September 2026. If you were making videos in Sora and need somewhere to go, here is what we would actually pick, based on our own measured testing rather than a spec sheet.

The two we have actually run through our own fixed 40-prompt battery are Kling and Grok. The other three are the models most commonly recommended as Sora replacements elsewhere; we have not measured them ourselves yet, and we say so rather than pretend otherwise.
What we would actually tell a friend
If you do not care about audio and mostly need a subject or character to stay recognisably the same across a few shots, Kling 3.0 is where we would start. It scored higher than Sora on multi-shot continuity in our testing, at roughly half the generation cost. The catch: despite what a lot of reviews claim, the version we tested generated zero audio on every dialogue prompt we ran. If you need your video to talk, this is not the one, at least not without confirming you are on the right variant first.
If audio matters and you are not ready to gamble on an unbenchmarked model, Grok is the one model besides Sora itself that gave us real, correctly-synced dialogue in our round. It is not perfect: it produced our single worst anatomy failure across all three models we tested, a clip with three separate hands manipulating a knife. Watch a test generation involving hands before you commit to it for anything with close-up manual detail.
What we are not telling you
We are not going to repeat "best AI video generator 2026" rankings that list six tools with a paragraph each and no evidence attached. Every recommendation above either comes from our own scored clips (Kling, Grok) or is flagged as third-party consensus we have not verified (Veo, Runway, Seedance). We would rather tell you what we do not know yet than fill the gap with a vendor's press release.
